Kristin -MSW Clinical Intern & Pro Bono Provider

Please Note that Kristin has successfully concluded their internship. CONGRATS to Kristin! Obsidian will not provide pro bono clinical support services during the summer months but will resume the Pro Bono Clinic in September 2024.

Kristin Henry (they/them) is a 2023-2024 MSW clinical intern. Providing no cost services at Obsidian Care Collective, Kristin is completing their second year, advanced clinical practicum from September ‘23-April ’24 both virtually and in person. J. Louise Newton, MSW, LCSW, SEP is Kristin’s clinical supervisor and a UNC Chapel Hill Field Instructor since 2011. Kristin works with individual adults, adolescents, and children specializing in the provision of care for transgender, gender expansive, and queer folks, with an interest in parents and children.

Kristin brings a grounding, affirming, and patient presence that allows you the space, support, and encouragement to explore and tap into your personal insight, wisdom, and power. They believe that each of us have gifts to aid us in our healing. Through curiosity and collaboration, they walk alongside you in navigating, coping, and thriving through hardships, life transitions, and self exploration, as you access your resourcefulness and resilience.

Kristin supports clients around issues of anxiety, depression, identity exploration, grief, trauma, communication, relationship challenges, parenting, fertility, adoption, substance use, body image, self harm, and other challenges. They use an integrated approach, drawing from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and other modalities as they apply.

Kristin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Women’s Studies, graduating magna cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Kristin is expected to complete a Master of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May of 2024. Additionally, Kristin has completed Duke University’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Certificate. Kristin has attended other conferences and professional development opportunities focused on gender diversity and non-profit leadership skills building.

For the past 19 years, Kristin has worked in national and community-rooted social justice organizations and they are committed to a liberatory framework, recognizing that many of the challenges faced by marginalized folks are caused, or exacerbated by, unjust systems.

Outside of studying and practicing, Kristin has two children and enjoys spending time with friends, in community, on trails, in the water, reading, and watching movies.
